THE CHALLENGES OF TRANSPORTING PINEAPPLES

Pineapples are very susceptible to mold, especially on the crown or peduncle. Fungicides are typically used to control molds.

Exposure of pineapples to ethylene results in faster degreening of the shell.

Pineapples are chilling sensitive. Chilling injury appears as water- soaking of the flesh, darkening of the core, increased susceptibility to decay, and wilting and discoloration of crown leaves.

Shippers often use fungicidal treat- ments to control molds.
